turtlegirl76 commented on the scarf today, about the width being somewhat alarming. Well, to be honest, I didn’t check my gauge, but I believe the pattern says it’s something like nine inches wide. I know a lot of folks stop at 11 repeats of the trapped bar, but I figured I’d go for the full nine yards (or eight feet, as the case may be). It was LOVELY last night at the midnight showing, though. Temperatures here dropped down to freezing, and it was large enough to drape over whatever part of me was cold. At one point it was a hood, even. And Mike was jealous. I guess he gets a scarf next. Well, after holiday knitting finishes. And it’s started, but I can’t post pictures. At least until I swear my sister to secrecy.
Thanks for the info. When you watched the movie, did you count 4 rows of CC too? I counted it every time they showed a close up. Now I think the pattern is wrong. You’re looks great though. I’m thinking about changing it though. But I’m not sure if what I calculated will be right. I wrote out my new calculations on my blog. I’d love your input.
OK, apparently I’m your biggest fan. ;^) Got another question, your scarf looks great when compared with the pics of the movie scarf I’ve seen. Did you use the 27 row guideline for the MC? I’m having to work up 48 rows to make mine match, and my gauge is spot on with the pattern. (5st x 6 rows = 1 inch) I know this thing is going to be big. But so is my nephew. So, heh.
Thanks for the response. I’m using the size 9 needles, so I don’t know why the 27 rows didn’t look nearly as wide as yours. Seems like they’d have looked bigger. Oh well. Guess I’m just making a hammock then. *sigh* Here’s hoping my nephew grows fast!
How mny skeins did you need for the project? Also, I am thinking of following your advice (from knitty) and ordering knitpicks, do you think harvest and hollyberry would work for Gryffindor?
Did I mention I liked the scarf, it looks great!
Monica - I used 10 skeins of Dusk and 2 of Fog. I originally ordered 8 of the Dusk, and had to order another two skeins to finish the last few stripes and the fringe.
Also, I have the color card for Merino Style here, which is what I used for my scarf. Hollyberry looks perfect for the crimson. The Harvest looks a little light on its own, but when I put it next to the Hollyberry, it looks pretty good. Actually, the two together remind me of the colors for the Washington Redskins. But then, the Griffindor colors do, as well. ![]()
If you’re concerned, I’d recommend the color card yourself. It’s $1.50, and you can feel and see the yarn yourself. Monitor colors can be misleading.
